The short answer
What is the best AI chatbot for business in Australia? It depends on the job. For customer service at scale, Intercom Fin is the strongest tool in the category, priced at US$0.99 per resolved conversation. For teams already on Zendesk, Zendesk AI. For a website chat widget on a small budget, Tidio. For a no-code bot you build yourself, ChatBot.com. For Instagram and WhatsApp marketing, ManyChat. For one inbox across WhatsApp, web chat, and Instagram, respond.io or SleekFlow. And if each enquiry is worth real money, say a $40,000 renovation or a $5,000 wholesale order, and nobody has time to run chatbot software, a managed service like 41 Closer builds and runs the agent for you from S$690 a month, roughly A$800. Fewer than five enquiries a week? Buy nothing yet. Answer them yourself, fast.

How we evaluated
Every price on this page comes from the vendor's own published pricing as of our July 2026 review. Where a vendor does not publish a single global price, as SleekFlow does not, we say so instead of guessing. Most tools on this list bill in US dollars, so budget with the exchange rate in mind: a US$79 plan is roughly A$120 a month at the time of writing.
We judged each tool on four things: what it does well, what it really costs, who has to operate it, and whether it fits how your customers actually reach you. That last point matters in Australia. Website chat and Instagram DMs carry most retail conversations, while WhatsApp is the default for trades, importers, exporters, and communities that already use it daily. A tool that only covers one of those channels solves only part of the problem.
Two disclosures. First, 41 Closer, in the managed category at the end, is our product. We have kept it in its own category, said plainly who should not buy it, and pointed you at cheaper tools wherever they are the better answer. Second, 41 Labs is a Singapore company. We serve Australian businesses remotely, and we say exactly what that means in the 41 Closer section rather than pretending to have a Sydney office. We publish the same monthly ranking for Singapore, where our client base is.
Customer service chatbots (self-serve)
These tools answer support questions: order status, how-do-I, refunds, opening hours. They cut cost rather than win revenue, and your team sets them up and runs them.
1. Intercom Fin: best for customer service automation at scale
Fin answers support questions from your help docs and past tickets, and you only pay when it fully resolves a conversation: US$0.99 per resolution, plus Intercom seats from US$39 per user per month. For Australian SaaS companies, online retailers, and any business with real ticket volume and good documentation, it is the strongest support automation tool on this list.
The honest limitation: Fin deflects support, it does not sell. It needs solid help content to ground it, and the maths makes little sense below a few hundred tickets a month. If your problem is enquiries going cold rather than ticket volume, look at the managed category below.
2. Zendesk AI: best if your support already runs on Zendesk
Zendesk builds AI agents directly into its help desk, and it has a large installed base in Australia. If your tickets already live in Zendesk, turning on its AI is the path of least resistance. Suite plans start at US$55 per agent per month billed annually.
The honest limitation: AI capability beyond the included basics is priced as add-ons and usage, so budget above the sticker price. If you are evaluating chatbots on their own, purpose-built rivals cost less. Do not buy Zendesk for the chatbot alone.
Website chatbots you build yourself
Widgets that live on your website and answer visitors before they leave. Cheap, quick to launch, and fine for FAQ answering and lead capture.
3. Tidio: best budget AI chatbot for small business websites
Tidio is the fastest cheap way to put a competent AI chatbot on your website. Paid plans start at US$29 per month, about A$45, and its Lyro AI agent starts at US$39 per month. Setup takes an afternoon. Best for FAQ answering and lead capture for cafes, salons, clinics, and small services firms.
The honest limitation is depth. Lyro answers from the content you give it and hands over to your inbox when it gets stuck. It will not quote a custom job, chase a lead who went quiet, or negotiate. For most small Australian businesses starting out, that trade is fine, and the price is right.
4. ChatBot.com: best no-code bot builder for teams that want control
ChatBot.com is a standalone platform where you design the bot yourself: visual flow builder, an AI model trained on your website and help content, and templates for lead generation and support. Plans start at US$52 per month on annual billing. Best for marketing teams that want full control of every answer without writing code.
The honest limitation: its home turf is the website widget and Facebook Messenger, in the LiveChat family of products. WhatsApp is not where it lives, so if your customers message you there, the platforms below fit better. And like every builder on this list, it is only as good as the person maintaining the flows.
Marketing and multi-channel platforms (self-serve)
These platforms connect chatbots and shared team inboxes to WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger through official APIs. All of them are software you operate: you build the flows, write the answers, and maintain them. Meta's per-conversation WhatsApp fees apply on top of every subscription. For what a WhatsApp AI chatbot can and cannot do, we keep a plain-English guide.
5. ManyChat: best for Instagram and WhatsApp marketing flows
ManyChat automates marketing conversations on Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and TikTok: comment-to-DM campaigns, giveaways, drip flows. There is a free plan; paid plans start at US$14 per month and rise with contact count. Chatfuel plays in the same class. For Australian creators, gyms, and retail brands running Instagram promotions, this category is the obvious buy.
The honest limitation: ManyChat restructured its plans in 2026 and now bundles its AI into paid tiers priced by active contacts, so a big audience raises the bill. It is excellent at starting conversations at scale. It is not designed to quote or close a $20,000 job.
6. respond.io: best multi-channel inbox for bigger teams
respond.io unifies WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and web chat into one inbox with automation and AI agent features. Plans start at US$79 per month, rising to US$159 and US$279. Best for Australian teams handling thousands of conversations a month across channels, with a dedicated person to own the tool.
The honest limitation: it rewards teams that give it an owner and punishes teams that do not. It is overkill for a two-person operation. We put it head to head with the managed approach in 41 Closer vs respond.io vs SleekFlow.
7. SleekFlow: best omnichannel chat with commerce features
SleekFlow is an omnichannel platform in the same class as respond.io, with a stronger lean toward selling in chat: product catalogues, payment links, and broadcast campaigns across WhatsApp, Instagram, and web chat. It has a free tier for small volumes, and paid plans are priced by region, so check the price it quotes for Australia rather than trusting a screenshot from another country.
The honest limitation: like respond.io, it is software your team operates, and the commerce features only pay off if someone maintains the catalogue and the flows. Its roots and support footprint are Asia-Pacific, which for Australian businesses is a workable timezone rather than a local office.
Managed AI sales agents (done-for-you)
Everything above is software you rent and operate. A managed AI sales agent flips that: the vendor builds the agent, loads your price list, connects your WhatsApp number and website chat, and keeps tuning it after launch. You buy the outcome, not another login. This category fits businesses whose enquiries are worth real money and whose team is too busy to run marketing software.
8. 41 Closer: best when each enquiry is worth real money and nobody will run a tool
41 Closer is a managed AI sales agent for WhatsApp and web chat, built and run by 41 Labs. It answers enquiries in seconds at any hour, quotes real prices from your own catalogue, follows up every lead, and hands off to a human when needed. From S$690 per month, about A$800, plus a one-time build fee from S$4,800, about A$5,500. It goes live in 48 hours and you can cancel any time.
Full disclosure: this is our product, so judge the fit for yourself. Two things Australian buyers should know before anything else. First, 41 Labs is a Singapore company. We serve Australian businesses remotely, over WhatsApp and video calls, with no office in Australia. Second, the timezone works in your favour: Singapore is 2 hours behind AEST and 3 behind AEDT, so our working day overlaps yours and you get same-business-day responses, not overnight ticket queues. It is a text agent for WhatsApp and web chat. It does not answer phone calls, and if your leads come in by phone we will tell you we are not the fit.
Who it is for: businesses where each enquiry carries real value. Renovation contractors, building material suppliers, clinics, B2B wholesalers, importers, services firms with four-figure jobs. The Minimum plan handles up to 350 chats a month; Pro at S$1,490 per month, about A$1,700, handles up to 1,000 chats, takes payment in the chat, and includes monthly tuning. Who should not buy it: if your enquiries trickle in at two a week, or each sale is worth $30, the maths does not work and a US$29 tool like Tidio or a free ManyChat plan is the smarter buy. You can test it before talking to anyone: WhatsApp +65 8012 4848 and the agent that replies is 41 Closer itself, selling itself. Which AI chatbot is best for customer service?
For pure customer service, the ranking is short. At scale, Intercom Fin: pay-per-resolution pricing means you only pay when it actually closes a ticket. If your support already runs on Zendesk, Zendesk AI wins on integration alone. At small scale, Tidio covers the basics for a tenth of the cost.
Be clear on what an AI chatbot for customer service buys you, though. Support bots cut cost. They resolve the routine 60 to 70 percent of questions: order status, opening hours, returns, booking changes. They do not sell, and their resolution rate depends entirely on the quality of the help content you feed them. Every good deployment also keeps a human handoff. A bot that cannot pass an upset customer to a person will cost you reviews faster than it saves you wages.
What should an Australian business pay for an AI chatbot?
Anchor on these numbers. Entry-level self-serve tools: free to about US$29 per month (ManyChat from US$14, Tidio from US$29, ChatBot.com from US$52 on annual billing). Multi-channel platforms with a team inbox: US$79 to US$279 per month for respond.io, with SleekFlow priced by region. Support automation at scale: Intercom Fin at US$0.99 per resolution plus seats. Managed agents: 41 Closer from S$690 per month, roughly A$800, operated for you. Fully custom builds, where the bot must work inside your own systems: typically S$7,000 to S$25,000 depending on scope.
Three cost items catch Australian buyers out. First, most tools bill in US dollars, so a US$79 plan is about A$120 a month before you have sent a single message. Second, on WhatsApp, Meta charges per-conversation fees on top of any software subscription, and a vendor who does not mention them is hiding your real cost. Third, no government grant offsets any of this for you. Singapore runs grant schemes for its own SMEs; they do not apply to Australian businesses, so treat any vendor waving grant discounts at you as a red flag.
DIY chatbot platform or managed service?
Ignore vendor labels and match your situation:
- Fewer than five enquiries a week. Buy nothing. Reply personally and fast. A chatbot here is a solution looking for a problem.
- The same 20 support questions on repeat. A self-serve support bot. Tidio at small scale, Intercom Fin at volume.
- You run Instagram or WhatsApp promotions and someone owns marketing. ManyChat.
- A team answers thousands of chats a month across channels. respond.io or SleekFlow, or Zendesk AI if you are already on Zendesk.
- Each enquiry could be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, replies go out late, and nobody will run a tool. A managed AI sales agent like 41 Closer.
- The bot must quote from live inventory or work inside internal systems no tool can reach. A custom build, typically S$7,000 to S$25,000.
The most common failure mode is not picking the wrong tool. It is buying a good tool and assigning nobody to run it. Six months later the subscription is still billing and the bot still says "We will get back to you." Decide who operates the thing before you decide which thing. That single question, who runs it, is the real dividing line between the DIY platforms and the managed category, and it matters more than any feature list on this page.
Red flags when buying an AI chatbot
- Nobody owns it. If you cannot name the person who will maintain the bot, do not buy self-serve software. Buy managed or buy nothing.
- You cannot talk to a live bot before paying. Any serious vendor can show you a working agent, not slides. Ours answers +65 8012 4848; hold every vendor to the same bar.
- The quote hides Meta's WhatsApp fees. Every WhatsApp tool pays Meta per-conversation charges on top. Ask for the all-in monthly number.
- "Unlimited AI" with undefined limits. AI responses cost the vendor money per message. Unlimited usually means a fair-use clause you have not read.
- It chats but cannot quote. If the bot cannot use your real price list, it is a brochure with a typing indicator.
- Fake local presence. Plenty of overseas vendors serve Australia well, including us. The red flag is the one pretending to have a Melbourne office it does not have. Ask where the team sits and what hours they cover.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI chatbot for a small business in Australia?
For most Australian small businesses, Tidio is the best starting point: a competent AI website widget from US$29 per month that takes an afternoon to set up. If your customers message you on Instagram or WhatsApp, ManyChat has a free plan and paid plans from US$14 per month. If each enquiry is worth hundreds or thousands of dollars and nobody has time to run software, a managed agent like 41 Closer is the better category. Under five enquiries a week? Buy nothing yet.
How much does a business AI chatbot cost?
Self-serve tools run from free to about US$29 per month at entry level (ManyChat from US$14, Tidio from US$29, ChatBot.com from US$52 on annual billing). Multi-channel platforms like respond.io start at US$79 per month. Intercom Fin charges US$0.99 per resolved conversation plus seats. Managed AI sales agents start at S$690 per month, roughly A$800, operated for you, plus a one-time build fee from S$4,800. Custom builds typically run S$7,000 to S$25,000. Meta's WhatsApp fees come on top of every WhatsApp tool, and no grant scheme offsets these prices for Australian businesses.
Do AI chatbots work for customer service?
Yes, within limits. A well-grounded bot resolves a meaningful share of routine questions, and pay-per-resolution pricing like Intercom Fin's exists precisely because vendors can now stand behind resolution rates. Results depend on the quality of the help content you feed it, and every good deployment keeps a human handoff for complex or upset customers. What support bots do not do is sell. They cut cost. Revenue comes from agents that quote real prices and follow up leads, which is a different category.
Can an AI chatbot handle WhatsApp and website chat together?
Yes. Multi-channel platforms like respond.io and SleekFlow unify WhatsApp, website chat, and Instagram into one inbox with automation you configure yourself. On the managed side, 41 Closer runs the same AI agent on both WhatsApp and web chat, built and operated for you. Whichever route you take, Meta charges per-conversation fees for WhatsApp on top of your software subscription.
If you are still not sure
Send your situation to +65 8012 4848 on WhatsApp: what you sell, how enquiries come in, what an average job is worth. The AI agent answering is 41 Closer, and it will try to sell you something, because that is the job. It is the same conversation your customers would have. If a US$29 self-serve tool is the right answer for your business, that is what we will tell you. We would rather be the page that told you the truth than the vendor that sold you shelfware.
